yogurt cereal
family, fun April 13th, 2006I did the grocery trip last week and was astounded as I walked down the cereal aisle. What's the deal with yogurt cereal? It's everywhere! It's an epidemic! We've been inundated with yogurt! Ahhh!
Just about every cereal from every major cereal manufacturer has a yogurt counterpart. Cheerios even has two variations of their Yogurt Burst cereals: Strawberry and Vanilla.
The problem with this, of course, is that my two year old has lost all respect for regular, old, "brown" Cheerios. She's a cereal racist. A grandparent who shall remain nameless introduced her to the "white" cereal, and it's all we hear about: "White cereal, please Daddy!" She then proceeds to shuffle through the bowl, retrieving each and every one of her precious, white, delicious yogurt-covered morsels straight from toddler heaven.
I suppose the manufacturers have introduced these yogurt cereals as a way of making you think it's more "healthy". I mean, yogurt is healthy, right? Or, are they just pumping a little more sugar into our otherwise boring, whole grain cereals?
If you're going to give us more sugar, then at least do it right. I'd like to see all cereals do away with the yogurt counterparts in exchange for chocolate! Mmmm. And, for the health conscious out there, remember that chocolate is healthy.

All things in moderation, despite commercial culture's penchant for ultra-deiversification in choices . . .BUT whatever my granddaughter wants in certain categories is fine with me.

This morning, I ate a bowl of Count Chocula, covered in Hershey's and substituted vanilla yogurt instead of milk. I highly recommend!
